Compact Types
and other tidbits about
Ladies Vanity Items
Compacts
provide us with a window into the past history of women and the
counties in which they reside. These items have been produced
throughout the 20th century and in fact were around since the
ancient times.
Compacts
produced in the early 20th century were small. I bet you can guess
why! It was considered indelicate for a woman to powder her nose or
face in public at that time, therefore the compacts were designed to
be discreet.
As
with fashion, things began to change beginning in the 1920s. This
change continued as woman gained the right to vote and later entered
the workforce. Naturally the Hollywood movie scene also came into
play. First, woman gained a sense of their own identity. They had
their own money and secondly, they wanted to emulate the screen
goddesses of the day. Compacts became larger and more elaborate as a
result.
Another factor
influencing the size of the compacts was the size of the purse they
were to be carried in. When smaller purses were in vogue, the
compacts were small.
FACT: The first
foundation was called Pancake and it originated in the 1930s.
